Captain’s log 5 Feb: Internet Marketing from Scratch, Only 36 Weeks To Go!
I seem to be surrounded by people trying to start an online business from scratch. Well, over the next 36 weeks I will document my journey of starting from scratch to build a business online that makes me money. That is the goal.
Let me explain a little. I already have a small but growing online business – this blog is a part of all that. But in my efforts to take this good start to the next level I have enrolled in John Thornill’s Internet Marketing Masterclass – one of the most respected online programs you can get into. Google it and see for yourself!
It’s not especially cheap but from my research it is certainly one of the best. It does not subscribe to the biggest myth of Internet marketing – of instant riches. Rather, it takes you bit by bit through the entire process of setting up and establishing a sustainable online business that will grow and create lasting income.
I am in week 1 right now and want to take you through each step, week by week, showing you what I do with John’s expert guidance. This will be from scratch even though I have already done many of these initial steps. This just gives me a head start I guess. This weekly ‘Captain’s Log’ will show you my journey and hopefully you will learn something from my experiences along the way.
Week 1:
- It’s important to establish your own personal web presence. You need a blog in your name. I have petedowns.com already so I’ve made a good start. Your domain name must reflect who you are and what you want to do. Simply go to somewhere like Namecheap and search for [yourname].com. If that is not available try a variation such as -.com. Register you own domain name.
- Find go hosting – I use Hostgator and have a Reseller account, meaning that I can have multiple domain names on one web host. While this is a little more expensive it allows you to grow you business in the future in a more cost-effective way.
- Your email accounts also need to reflect who you are and be professionally linked to your business. It does not look to great if you have ‘hotmail’ or similar for your business address! It needs to me something like ‘admin @ petedowns.com’ or ‘contact @ petedowns.com’. Your web hosts will usually have instructions within cpanel on how to do this.
So, in week one I have a presence online – a domain name, a web host and email accounts set up – all in my name.
The journey has begun.
